![]() By: Eduardo Yanez With soccer season coming to an end, an update is in need. The boys started off rough but it seems now that they have managed to gain a four-game winning streak. The girls seem to be doing fine as they have just beat their local rivals once again for the second time this season. The boys are appearing to be making somewhat of a comeback as they defeat the team currently in first place. The boys turned the season around after they took their fourth defeat against Cristo Rey High School. Since then the boys have defeated Summit Shasta for the second time, first place holder Summit Prep, their local rivals DCP Alum Rock, and last but not least LCPA. The girls seemed to take a turn for the worst up until last week when the girls defeated their local rivals for the second time. The boys seem to have flipped the script as they are now on a four-game winning streak. Their next matchup is against first place team Summit Prep who are looking for revenge after losing to KIPP on the first match. The KIPP boys are looking to defeat Summit once more and take a spot among the top three schools on the leaderboard. One of the captains from the KIPP boys varsity team said, “ Summit is our last hard game. After winning this game the rest of the league will be a smooth cruise. I’m proud of the boys because they all have learned so much and we have really turned things around in the league.” The boys seem optimistic about the league despite having a rough start. The girls seemed to have a downfall after losing two games in a row, but that all changed last week. The KIPP girls varsity soccer team faced their local rivals, DCP Alum Rock, for the second time and they came out victorious. The KIPP girls were triumphant after winning by a score of three to zero. The KIPP girls varsity soccer team captain had this to say, “This is what the girls needed. We needed to win to get our motivation and now we will use this as momentum to hopefully defeat the rest of the teams left in the season.” The girls seem motivated to end off the season strong as they prepare for their next match against Cristo Rey. The season may be coming to an end, but both the boys and the girls seemed determined to end off the season with a bang. The Wolfpack may have had a rough start, but now it’s their turn to leave their mark on the league. How will the boys and girls finish the season? Stay tuned to find out.

It’s the 2nd year of the KSJC Golf team in the division and they aren’t off to a great start. This team has some returning players and a majority of them are young, so they’re going to develop throughout the season. They’ve had four games and it isn’t looking too good which is causing them to suffer from a 0-4 record. “We’re getting there. Just give us some time” Cristian Becerra had said after being reminded of the record. However, even though a lot of people play this game, they still don’t have a correct understanding of the rules. Golf is a unique game. Others consider golf as more of a “game” compared to a “sport”. A variety of sticks are able to be used to hit the golf ball, depending on what area the ball is. Unlike most sports, the score is determined differently. In golf, the lower the score, the more it’s actually worth. A round of golf is played over 18 holes. The score is based on the number of tries it takes a person of the team to get the golf ball into the hole. So, the lower your score is, the higher chance you have of winning. Generally, you are in charge of keeping track of the score for your opponent, and your opponent is responsible for keeping track of your score. I interviewed one of the golf players and asked them why they decided to join the golf team this spring and he responded saying,“I joined the golf team because I had past experience as a younger kid and I thought it would be something that I would go back to” Ethan Khuu-Tran has said. Then I asked Daniel Le, what is the hardest part of playing golf and he said,“Getting your strokes right. When you aim incorrectly, the ball doesn’t go where you want it to go”. Head coach of the KSJC Golf team, Coach Thomas has brought the team to a 0-4 record. The team consists of a total of 12 players with ranging from all different grade levels. There is three freshmen, six sophomores, one junior, and two seniors. The three freshman on the team is Kayla Wong, Cristian Becerra, and Daniel Le. The six sophomores are Ethan Khuu-Tran, Samantha Delgado, Daisy Carmona, Andre Pham, Thuy Nguyen, and Celine De Villa. The only junior on the team is Ethan Pugay, and lastly, the two seniors are Chloee Wong, and team captain Tyler Thai. The team’s latest game was against Independence High School on April 2nd. They lost to a score of 310 to 244. With more time and practice, their next few games shouldn’t be so hard. By Itzel Guttierez
KSJC Girls basketball season has officially started. They work hard during their practices but work just as hard during their games. The girls JV team has a total of 13 games this season for now. As of now they have played against 2 schools and unfortunately lost, although that does not bring them down and the team is working hard and improving. They stay persistent and they don’t give up when things seem like it’s going downhill. There are many expectations for being in JV and staying in JV. Starting with having to maintain a GPA and not failing any classes. Also, good sportsmanship and controlling yourself if something doesn’t seem right. Including playing by the rules, no cheating of any sort. If one of the girls on the team are not passing any classes the coach will have a conversation with them and see what steps need to be taken to figure the situation out. The girls on the team are improving and getting through their struggles to win a game. During their practices, they try different things and see how they feel about it and if they feel confident doing that play during the game. Each Junior Varsity team member has their own thing they need to work on but they all work together to help each other improve. Together they not only help each other but they start to build bonds with one another. Katelyn, the point guard for the Junior Varsity, was interviewed. She was asked, “Was it hard making it on the team?”, with her response being, “A lot of work during tryouts, the harder you work the more likely you will play.” Also, continuing the interview she was asked what the expectations are, her response being “We have 3 values, Sisterhood, Persistence, Excellence… at the very end of the game we give shoutouts to each other.” In Conclusion, the Girl’s Junior Varsity team works hard. They stay persistent, never give up. And most importantly they build bonds and support each other. Even if they don’t win that doesn’t bring them down, if anything they work harder and improve. The Girl’s Junior Varsity is a strong team and hard-working. By: Madison Tlatenchi ![]() The girls varsity soccer team is filled with skilled, kind hearted and determined girls this season. Like every new season, the coaches and the players strive to become better and to learn new skills. This will be a season to remember. Team Members: Recent Games: Jennifer Ortega KSJC vs Pinewood High School J. Medina (0-3) Adriana Cruz M. Pinedo KSJC vs Alpha Cindy Avita Maria Castilljo (0-6) Valeria Del Real S.Madera KSJC vs Eastside College Prep Brianna Delatorre (0-3) Paola Ramirez Shakira Ramirez Izabelle Hernandez Cassandra Yera Licon S. Aguirre J. Aparicio Cassandra Rivas Coach Arambula Mr. Arambula, the girls' varsity soccer coach, is really passionate about the team and is determined to take not make them better players but people. His goal for this season is, ”I want my players to be empathetic humans that will support each other through good or bad.” He also has expectations for them like, ”Applying what we learn on the field in the classroom. No, I don't mean kicking a ball inside of the classroom, but, I mean being great teammates and learning to be resilient through defeat.” _________________________________________________________________ As I talked to some of the team players about the recent game and what they hoped for this season. As the girls reflected on what they hope to practice for the next following days until their next match against Alpha Cindy Aviata, they had a few things to say. Coach Arambula said, ”We've only had three games so far, so, I don't have much to go off of. What I will say is that we need more work on passing and dribbling skills as well as a bit of conditioning.” Izabelle Hernandez (#15), ”Some things that I hope to practice on is communicating during games and conditioning more so we can be more aggressive. Another thing is being more quicker on the field with passing the ball.” While someone like Shakira, a junior at KSJC, wants the team to not only communicate more but to play more aggressively. Brianna, a sophomore here at KSJC, wants the team to work together and support each other more. Working on both could really help the team but the girls have to be driven and always willing to learn. What do you want to individually achieve this season? Each player has their own strength and they have things that they want to get better at. As I asked this player this question they seemed excited to work on their weaknesses for next season. Brianna (#12),” I hope I improve in each skill so that I can be the best player I can be on the field.” Izabelle Hernandez(#15),” Some players including myself hope to achieve this season is to win the championship and building a stronger bond with the whole team and the coaches. Shakira (#17),’’ I hope we make it to the championships and take the trophy home.” Jackie Torres (#1),” I hope to get better at defense skills since this is my 2nd year playing and I wanna become better for myself and the team.” While other girls told me about what they wanted to work on. Maria Castillejo, the team captain, focused more on her teammates than herself,” I hope every girl gets something out of this season including tons of memories. I want to become a better team leader and I need to focus on my own passing and scoring.” What things will make your team stronger? Something that the majority of the players have said that will make their team stronger is focusing more on supporting one another and teamwork. They have barely started their season and some girls are barely getting to know each other. Building a supportive and happy environment for the team can be a great foundation into leading them into victory. Knowing that they can trust one another and keeping their heads up even when they are losing. This team is filled with strong and caring people who will strive to get better for not only themselves but for the team. This season is going to be filled with great memories and the girls improving. Stay tuned for future events and games. ![]() By Eduardo Yañez KIPP San Jose Collegiate boys soccer team had their first game on December 1, 2018. They faced Lynbrook once again for the 4th year in a row. In the past KSJC has tied 2 games and lost 1. This past Saturday another loss was added to the list. Lynbrook defeated KSJC 3-2. KSJC was a goal short of another draw, but, according to the players and coaches of KSJC, KSJC had a fair chance of winning the game. KSJC started off slow and without rhythm. Lynbrook on the other hand, started off explosive and extremely quick. Lynbrook took advantage of KSJC’s slow start and scored 2 goals in the first 5 minutes. Mid first half KSJC decided to react and scored a retaliation goal. Captain #10 Eduardo Yanez crossed the ball and Captain #6 Steve Rosales headered it into the box where Juan Carlos Centeno blasted it in. The weather was all over the place. The weather switched from intense rain and hail to sunny and warm. KSJC started the second half with a winning mentality. The whole squad was fired up and ready to go win the game. Captain #10 Eduardo Yanez was fouled at the edge of Lynbrook’s box. Lalo, Eduardo’s nickname, sets up the ball for the free kick. Lalo positions himself, the referee blows the whistle. Lalo shoots and scores to give KSJC a goal and one step closer to winning the game. The final whistle was blown and the players walked off the field. Team Captain #6 Steve Rosales said, “ For our first game playing together as a team we did pretty good. The defense was solid, the attack was doing some work up top, but we have no middle. That’s where we need to fix things. Especially the Center Defensive Mids. By next game, we will have fixed this and we will be even better.” Head Coach Ruva said, “I was just trying to see where they play the best and where they are the most beneficial to the team. I made a lot of substitutions, but the boys still managed to play with each other and to play a good game.” Although the KSJC boys lost, they are satisfied with how the team played. By: Yamileth Altamirano ![]() If you didn’t know, KSJC has a girls varsity soccer team and they have amazing players and some of the players are: Jazmin Medina #4 (Senior), Izabelle Hernandez #15 (Freshman), Giovanna Lozano #9 (Junior), Maria Castillo - Captain #8 (Junior), Jennifer Ortega - Captain #3 (Senior), Sahira Madera #11 (Junior) and their coach, Gustavo Arambula. The team captain’s are Maria Castillo and Jennifer Ortega and as I asked girls on the team what they think about their captains, most of them think that both of them are great people and are very kind caring people that are gonna lead their team to victory. An example comes from #15 Izabelle Hernandez, “They are both very kind and caring. They are very good players and know how to play their positions.” The soccer team so far has not won any games and that’s okay because it’s only the start of their season. I asked some of the team members how they felt about losing their first couple of games and how they think their season will go. “I think we are going to do very well this season we just need more practice on what we need most help on. Also we should build a strong bond.” Izabelle Hernandez (#15) I also asked how they think they can improve and stay at the top of their game and Izabelle Hernandez said “How we are going to improve and stay at the top of the game is to be more aggressive, making sure we are communicating with each other during the games.” A parent watching the game says, “I know that they are really good players but their just discouraged because they haven't won any of their games yet.” and a student from KSJC said, “I don’t think we're gonna do as good as last year, but they just need some more practice.” Who are the captains? Maria Castillo and Jennifer Ortega What do you think about them? “They are both very kind and caring. They are very good players and know how to play their positions. - Izabelle Hernandez(#15), What are their strengths? “Her strengths are that she is a good player and a very good person and can handle the ball.” - Izabelle Hernandez(#15), What can they work on? "I think that she can work on the communication with the team during the game” - Izabelle Hernandez(#15), ![]() By: Alyssa Becerra On April 14, 2018 KSJC senior and junior prom was held at Hotel Valencia located on Santa Row in San Jose. Formally, everyone knows prom to be a grand and marvolus dance for juniors and seniors that happens at the end of the year to create a memory that’ll last a lifetime. Over the course of four years, prom had been something that I was looking forward to doing. Having the opportunity to go to prom is something that has allowed some students have the “High school” experience. On the day of prom, for most students it’s a stressful, exciting, amazing day all in one emotion. There are steps that lead up to the day of prom. The ticket expense, buy the dress or tux, the pictures, the flowers and many more things that factor into spending a lot of money on just that one day. For many of the girl students there was a mixture of emotions. Stressful was one of the major ones for the girls. Arely Saavedra said,” I found my dress the day before prom, it is one of the most stressful things that I have done in a while”. This is probably suggesting that it is extremely hard to look for a dress for prom. For the men I was talking to my good friend Arturo Lopez and he said that he had found his tux in a matter of one to two weeks before prom. The amount of responsibilities that are put into prom not only for the students but also the people who are in the prom committee. The people who are in charge of the prom had to look for a location, theme, and many more places that factor into having an amazing prom. The day of prom is the most exciting for many students. I know that many of the girls were getting ready since ten in the morning. As for the guys they did the normal routine of getting a haircut and freshening up before the pictures. The well known places to take pictures for prom is the Rose Garden and the Egyptian Garden. For many of my friends they went to the Rose Garden to capture the perfect images. Being able to go to a good location to take pictures is something that is very important because when students grow older and they want to look back to the day that they went to prom, they aren’t going to have any regret when it comes to the location. Another factor that is super important for the day of prom is your date or the group of people that you plan or going with. The importance of going with someone that has the same energy as you is very important because you wouldn’t want to be stuck with a person who doesn’t want to dance or at least take a picture . Fortunately I went with a family friend and met up with friends later on to take pictures. As of other students that day they did the same thing, meet up with friends to take memorable pictures with and later on arrive to prom at the same time. For KSJC prom it started at seven in the evening to eleven at night. Once you arrived there are tables all over the room and a dance floor in the center of the room. There was a buffet of Italian food and a dessert table to clench your sweet tooth. Other parts of the room was the photo booth. For the photo booth, it was a flipbook that was seven seconds long to capture the moments all at once. During the whole event there was music playing to keep a vibe in the room. At the end of the night ha selected teacher was chosen to announce the junior and senior prom king and queen. Before people started leaving I had the chance to ask them if there was something they would want to change from prom what would it be, about 70% of the students that I asked said that they would’ve wanted more people to go and the other 30% had different opinions. For example not having the teachers table in front of the dance floor was somewhat a common one. Also having a variety of desserts for after the food was another choice. To improve prom for the following years to come, talking to students around campus can help out the ideas for that night. Going with someone that will enjoy the night as much as you is also something to think about before that day comes. But the most important thing is to have a great time with the people you have grown with for the past four years and make memories that you won’t be able to forget and look back for enjoyment. ![]() By: Valeria Del Real Many students here at KIPP San Jose Collegiate have shared one or more complaints regarding the Wolfpack STUD (Student) Store. However, Wolfpack fans will not lose hope because the season isn’t over yet. The roster for this season starts off with Jose Castillo(OF, INF), Joal Pena(INF, OF), Emilio Delgadillo(INF), Leon Osias(INF), Edvin Gaspar(INF, OF), Jose Romero(OF), Antonio Nunez(INF, OF), Edwin Romero(INF, OF), Duy Dinh(INF, OF), Alexandro Barragan(INF, OF), Vincent Back(INF), Conrad Mateo(OF), Carlos Alvarez(INF, OF), Kevin Garcia(INF, OF), Juan Quero(INF, OF), David Luna(INF). KSJC’s in league zero wins and four losses. The rank for KSJC is 1190 and their national rank is 12079. The Wolfpack Varsity baseball team is being coached by Osvaldo Reza. Coach Reza is an algebra teacher at Kipp San Jose Collegiate. Reza was a new addition to the Wolfpack community, coming in to teach the last half of the year due to teachers leaving. Growing up in LA, Reza played multiple sports in highschool, but he enjoyed baseball the most. He attended College of The Holy Cross, and before coming to teach at Kipp he taught at a school in Las Vegas. When asked how this season is going he replied, “I think it could definitely be going better winning wise. The boys on the team now are great kids, they just need to push themselves harder.” The star player of the baseball team so far this season is, number 20, David Luna. David plays catcher and pitcher for the KSJC Wolfpack. David’s skills and effort in the game definitely don't go unnoticed. Almost more than half the team thought that David should be elected for the most valuable player. David is not only a good player but also a good teammate. He is very supportive of others and “encourages us to do better,” said Duy Dinh. The first game the boys played was against North Valley Baptist where they lost 22-2. North Valley started off with a lead that the Wolfpack just couldn’t catch up to. With most of their only points being scored by “walks”. The Wolfpack boys will have another chance to play North Valley Baptist on April 30th. On April 12th the boys baseball team played against Pinewood High where they again lost 22-0. Having the same issue they had with North Valley, the Wolfpack just couldn’t keep up with the opposing team. The boys have played six games so far this season and sadly they lost all of them. Recently the boys were arranged to play against DCP Alum Rock, on April 16th, but the game was cancelled due to weather conditions. There are a numerous amount of games left in the season which leaves hope to the team and fans that they’ll win a game. Fans and supporters of the KSJC Wolfpack baseball team hope that they’ll be able to have a come back before the season is over. Number 3 on the team, Emilio Delgadillo, says that the reason why the team is doing so poor this season could be because of “lack of support from fans and teammates.” When asked to expand on that thought he said, “If more people came out to watch our games I think my team would be able to use the support of our peers to push ourselves to do better.” So, come out and show your Wolfpack pride. Show support to your home team by going to their games or simply acknowledging the team for their hard work. Your support might be one of the reasons why the team wins! |
