Miranda Arreguin The topic of abortion has been a controversal debate all over media and news. People have had mixed opinions on wether or not abortion should be legal or not. People may see abortion as unethical from their point of view or they may see it as ethical. It depends all on the person and what they believe in. Many people see abortion as a “bad” thing and other people see it as something that should be a right. In the US currently abortion is legal and has many abortion clinics like Planned Parenthood. When it comes to abortion it really depends on how the person views it and their beliefs. There are people who don’t know the disadvantages of abortion and the advantages as well. Being informed about abortion and what it is can change your current view on it, or it can simply inform you more about the topic. Abortion is the deliberate termination of a human pregnancy, most often performed during the first 28 weeks of pregnancy according to the google dictionary. In shorter words abortion is when a fetus in the womb is removed before it completes around 6 months of forming in the womb. Abortion is most likley to be performed by obstetrician-gynecologists who have specialized training. Abortion has to be performed by a licensed physician, if not performed by a licensed physician it is considered a crime. The procedure of abortion starts with an examination of the uterus. They put a speculum in order to see the vagina, and then inject a numbing medication either near or into the cervix. They stretch the opening of the cervix with a series of dilating rods if not put in earlier. The physician then inserts a thin tube through the cervix and into the uterus. Using a small hand-held suction device/machine takes out the pregnancy from the uterus. Sometimes they use a curette to remove any left over tissue. This process isn’t a specific amount of pain, every woman who goes through it will have different pain tolerances. The procedure is often described as strong period cramps. Many people see abortion as a right or something that shouldn’t be considered as a “bad” thing. Many women go through unexpected pregnancies and are not ready to have a baby. Some women feel like thay arent able to take care of the baby when it’s born and decide that abortion will help them. An argument many people often use to make abortion seem as ethical, is using rape victims who are impregnated and dont want to have the baby. Many women see abortion as something that could save them or help them. Many women may not be ready emotionally or money-wise to provide for a baby and being able to take care of it. There are many reasons that women would not want to have a baby wether it’s not being ready, they’re not able to provide for the child, or they’re Abortion is very conterversal due to the different views and the fact that not everyone sees abortion the same way. “I think abortion is something that should be an option for women because I think not all women are able to provide for a baby and it could be an escape for them.” Alejandra Palomares comments on her opinion when it comes to aboriton. She believes abortion should be something any women could get because not everyone can take care and be responsible of a baby. There are other options other than abortion when a woman isn’t able to have a baby or provide for it. Many women go through their whole pregnancy and have their babies put up for adoption. People who don’t agree with abortion often see abortion as the murder of a baby. Abortion can be seen differently depending on the person and their beliefs. There can be different alternatives than abortion and adoption is one of the main alternatives. Opinions of abortion can also depend on gender or age. “It should be illegal because I think they should be responsible for their own actions.” This is Gissell Carreon’s opinion on abortion. She believes abortion shouldn’t be an option becase it’s the person’s responsiblity. Abortion can be seen differently and it really just depends on the person. Whatever situation that you are in will influence the way you view abortion. In conclusion, abortion will keep being a controversal topic due to peoples different views and opinions on abortion. Abortion is a whole procedure that involves getting the fetus removed from the womb. That procedure leads many people with mixed emotions and mixed opinions. People could be agree that abortionshould be an option because they view it as something that could be beneficial for the woman and the fetus. The person who does not agree with abortion sees it as a person killing another person or they just see it is a bad thing in general. Informing yourself on what abortion is and how people view it can help you better undestand why people believe what the believe about topics such as abortion. Abortion does not have to be one certain opinion because everyone is their own person and have different opinions.

Intro Martin Luther King is a very famous person that changed a lot of people's mindsets. And he had a dream and he always tried to complete that dream and to always succeed.
You can enjoy the day byself and have a day all by yourself and you can reduce all of the stress that you got from school all week. And you can go out with some of your friends to go eat and spend time together.
And you find some good movies and you don't have to go to the amc you can just stay at home with your family and siblings and enjoy a good movie at home and you won't have to spend a lot of money on snacks. You can take your family to go see Frozen 2 for your siblings. Or you can take your girlfriend to go see a movie that she wants to see. But the purpose of this is to enjoy some free time and release some stress.
Conclusion All of these reasons that I listed show how you can celebrate martin luther king jr day. And they are all ways that you can release some of your stress that you have in school. So this is why we have that day off and some of the ways that you can spend it. The vast majority of students are excited for the end of the school year and for summer to begin. Summer can be a wonderful time to relax, have fun, and spend time with friends and family. Although, usually kids start to get bored over the summer with the huge amount of freetime at hand. These are some activities to keep you busy and having fun throughout summer before the school year begins again. Amusement Parks: Amusement parks can be one of the funnest things to do over the summer because of the abundancy in activities and rides. Some of the nearest amusement parks to San Jose are California's Great America, Happy Hollow Park and Zoo, and Raging Waters. These amusement parks have many roller coasters, thrill rides, family-friendly rides, and options to eat within them. This is a good place to go with friends and family especially because the more people to experience these rides, the merrier. Going to the Mall: Going to the mall is a easy thing to do over the summer. A plus is that these is air conditioning for when the days are especially hot during the summer. Another plus, is it can help for early school shopping if one might want to spice up their uniform. There is also the loved food court at many malls to be able to eat and try new foods. Even if one might not afford a shopping spree, it can still be enjoyable to walk around with friends with some french fries from Mcdonalds. Another pro for going to the mall, is you can choose to watch a movie. Movies coming out in the summer are Toy Story 4 (June 21), Spider-Man: Far from Home (July 2), The Lion King (July 19), and many more (complete list). It can also be a time to rewatch some of the favorites like Avengers: Endgame, Aladdin, and Pokemon Detective Pikachu being popular so far. In Eastridge mall, there is also a roller-skating rink that can be a fun thing to try. Beach Day: One of the most popular things to do over summer is to visit the beach! Living in California means that we have the ocean in our backyard. What better way to cool off than to feel the sea breeze and play in the waves. A drive to the beach can be as quick as 45 minutes to an hour. Although this makes it farther than other things, there are many things to do at the beach. This includes going to tide pools, overlook seals, birds, dolphins, and maybe even migrating whales, and visit Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk for thrill rides. Meanwhile the weather is hot, it gives a perfect opportunity to take a picnic to the beach with one's family and loved ones. Volunteer: Volunteering is a good way to give back to the community and feel productive. With summer coming up, one might be having a lot of freetime and volunteering is a generous way to spend it. Some opportunities to give back are helping out at the library, the Second Harvest Food Bank (learn more), local parks (learn more) or at the Red Cross (learn more). Volunteering to help the planet is also tremendous help that includes cleaning the beaches, volunteering at a recycle center, and picking up litter around your community. Try New Things: With all the time in summer, it is easy to be able to try somethings new. This can be anything from new foods, a new style, or a new skill. Skills one might be interested in learning could be:
These activities and many more could be beneficial to one’s character and skill set. It also provides chances to meet new people and learn something new. Camp: Many people have a love-hate relationship with camping and sleeping on the ground, regardless it can still be very fun. All throughout the bay area, there are many beach campsites, park campsites, and lake campsites. Yosemite being one of the closest national parks makes it an exciting opportunity. The Pinecrest lake is also nice to barbeque, camp, and go swimming throughout the trip. And even if one doesn’t have the opportunity to sleep under the stars in a campsite, one could always set up a tent outside and camp with a sibling or friend. Smores’ can be homemade with graham crackers, marshmallows, and hershey's. These were just some ideas about what to do over summer. Most importantly, summer should be a time to relax and have fun. Whether it be going on the Drop tower, observing starfish at tide pools, or camping in your backyard with a friend, summer should be full of fun memories. Whatever the activity might be, it is for the best that it is enjoyable to build good memories. Hopefully, everyone has a fantastic summer filled with fun and adventure. By: Hector Hernandez Earth Day is an annual event celebrated in over 193 countries around the world to demonstrate support for environmental protection. First celebrated in 1970, it now includes events coordinated globally by the Earth Day Network. On that day, many people do different things show show their love in keeping the earth as healthy as possible. People will celebrate it in planting over 100 million trees in a day, buy reusable bags, clean up streets, or providing help in a local community garden. If earth day wasn’t a thing, chances are that not many great things such as planting trees and plants, creating a garden would be decrease and increase the chances of garbage on the streets and oceans. More since trees would be cut down, there wouldn’t be as much trees planted as there are on Earth Day. Celebrating this day effects people to do something great to the world in making it better.
By: Marco Carreno Allergies are one of the most common chronic diseases. An allergy occurs when the body’s immune system sees a substance as harmful and overreacts to it. The substances that cause allergic reactions are allergens. When someone has allergies, their immune system makes an antibody called immunoglobulin. That may occur in response to a range of different material such as food, pollen, dust mites, animals, insect sightings, or medicines. Allergies occur when your immune system reacts to a foreign substance such as pollen, bee venom, pet dander, or a food. Your immune system produces substances known as antibodies. When you have allergies, your immune system makes antibodies that identify a particular allergen harmful, even though it isn’t. When you come in contact with the allergen, your immune system’s reaction can inflame your skin, sinuses, airways, or digestive system. The severity of allergies varies from person to person and can range from minor irritation to to anaphylaxis(a severe, potentially life threatening allergic reaction) a potentially life threatening emergency. While most allergies can’t be cured, treatments can help relieve your allergy symptoms. You may be able to reduce your symptoms enough using over the counter allergy drugs. You can cure allergies by using oral tablets or allergy shots. These medications are what are considered disease modifying treatments. They don’t cure allergies, but they may significantly reduce your sensitivity to your allergy triggers and reduce your allergic response. The best way to cure allergies is to buy allergy pills. If you bought the allergy pills you would feel more relieved. Allergies are helping cure people by not letting them sneeze or have runny noses throughout the day. By: Kimberly Rodriguez Most people think of Easter as a Christian holiday that celebrates the resurrection of Jesus, however, the way we celebrate Easter today actually combines Christianity with other ancient pagan celebrations. Easter has changed throughout the years and has turned into a non-christian tradition, such as the Easter bunny hiding Easter eggs filled with candies. Easter in Christianity Christians started to celebrate Easter three days after Jesus Christ was crucified and has continued to be celebrated today. There are some Christian groups that reject Easter, such as, the Quakers and the Hebrew-Christians. A religious symbol of Easter is a cross and represents the whole meaning of Easter, like Jesus’s resurrection and suffering. For Christians it is traditional to buy new clothes to wear to church on Easter. Church on Easter day is all about joy and celebrating by singing song and hymns. Origins of the Easter Bunny The Easter bunny comes from the German tradition of the Osterhare. It first arrived in America in the 1700s with German immigrants. Children would then making nests to where this “Osterhase” lays their eggs. The Easter Bunny symbolizes fertility. There are also other Osterhare traditions that Germans do, for example, the Easter Tree. These colorful trees decorated with Easter eggs are for decor in a home. The Easter Fountain is called an “Osterbrunnen” are when public fountain is decorated with colorful eggs. Easter Eggs Easter eggs are a symbol of new life. Eggs are colored and delicately decorated by hand. They are usually dyed with natural materials like tea, roots, and spices. When eggs are dyed red it represents Jesus’ blood. Easter eggs are a huge part of easter tradition because it makes Easter fun but is related to Jesus Christ’s Resurrection on that special day. Easter eggs allow for children to have fun celebrating this day as well, it allows for memories to be present as many kids grow up and the same for their future children. By: Juan Garcia Racism has been in the United States ever since the country was first formed in the 13 colonies and around 300 years later which is the present although it is not as easily shown or accepted as it once was but there are still plenty of racist people which means plenty of incidents involving racism and Mexicans are still the target of people’s hate today and here are some experiences that I as a Mexican can recall. I can’t really recall my first experience with racism but one experience that I can remember was from the President during the election when he was talking about Mexico and when he said, “When Mexico sends its people, they’re not sending their best. They’re not sending you. They’re not sending you. They’re sending people that have lots of problems, and they’re bringing those problems with us. They’re bringing drugs. They’re bringing crime. They’re rapists. And some, I assume, are good people.” When Trump said this it personally attacked me because my parents came from Mexico to escape poverty and to look for a better life in the land of opportunities but they have never committed any crimes. This doesn’t just apply to me but a lot of other Mexicans I know had parents that came to America in hope of a better life and aren’t even close to Trump’s description. Some other experiences that I have had with racism are even just when I’m playing video games and when I anger either my teammates or enemy team on accident or sometimes on purpose and they try to offend me by using my username MexicanNinja770 against me and using slurs about Mexicans like “wetback” or “bean*r” through the game in an attempt to mock me but I just brush it aside and keep playing but sometimes i can’t help but think about what kinds of things or people are creating and fueling these racist ideas in people but then I remember that there will always be people who judge you on things that you cannot change whether it is your skin color, race, ethnicity, or etc. However, at the same time I remember people like President Trump who repeatedly says things about Mexicans that are just down right false and fails to show the truth about us and how much we contribute to this country whether it be economically or culturally. These have only been some experiences with racism that I could recall which surprisingly isn’t that much but if you ask people around there is bound to be at least one person who has had someone judge them based on something that isn’t their fault and isn’t changeable however we have to learn to ignore the arrogant people who hold racist views whether it be toward Mexicans, Black, or even if it’s not about race but anything in general that can’t be changed about someone or else we might end up fueling their ideals. By: Anissa Amparan If you haven't heard it in the news yet, I’ll let you know a little bit more about the college admissions scandal that has been recently fluttering the internet. Most people have heard the story of Lori Loughlin, Aunt Becky from Full House, and her daughter Olivia Jade Giannulli. But there was a total of thirty-three wealthy parents charged in the case of this scandal; That including celebrities, business leaders, and just regular wealthy folks. This story has been blasted across all news sites because of how corrupt it actually is. Rich people are using their money to get their child something they have never even worked for. I am here to tell you more about that and how that impacts the rest of the students, including us. This all started on March 15th, 2019, when actresses Lori Loughlin and Felicity Huffman were exposed for bribing their child’s way into college. The way this happens is the parents “donate” a couple sum of money to these colleges and this allows a guaranteed entrance to the kids. Not only did the parents bribe the school but they did to many of the coaches as well. They do this so their children can be involved in some sort of sport. Also, it was proven that the children’s ACT and SAT scores were faked. I’m pretty sure this happened because the proctors for the exam were bribed and helped the students out in some way. Millions of juniors and seniors take this test but even those who try their best on it don’t always succeed. But somehow, the kids involved in the scandal were able to get into a very competitive college without needing to even try on this big test. With all the parents together they spent nearly 25 million dollars in bribes. About 23 defendants are scheduled to appear on April 5, 2019, in the courts. No students were arrested or charged for any of these scandals, but many of the 50 parents were. Most of the parents will be charged with some form of racketeering. Not only were parents charged but also six university coaches and test administrators too. But as for the students they were not in the clear, most of them will be kicked out of the school even if they knew about the situation or not. It was also found that one kid’s writing was at a fourth-grade level when an essay turned in had been shared. As the hammer is being laid down on these rich folks, anyone who actually works hard to apply to these schools have been turned down. Now that I have laid down the basis of the case, I would like to share my opinion on this scandal. I understand that these people have money, but this money was used in a way to only benefit themselves and their children. If I am being honest I don't believe those kids really deserved to be accepted into the schools. Most of them have set out claims that they are only in college for the parties and just to have fun. Even if they don't go off to college, they will still be successful because of their parents’ money. As for people like me, and most people on my campus, it proposes a disadvantage. We work so hard to try and meet our goal, college. We go to school eight hours a day, five days of the week, just so we can keep strengthening ourselves to get where we want to be. But as for these kids, they didn't even need to try to get into their dream schools. While they were accepting them, the school was turning down kids who worked hard to build their application from what they actually know. So basically, I feel like it is unfair that the kids involved with this scandal are just able to rely on their parents’ money while we must rely on ourselves for our own future. By: Ramon Galindo Justin “Jussie” Smollett is a Brazilian American actor and singer. He’s most known for being in the show Empire. Smollett claimed that he was a victim of a hate crime. One week before the alleged attack, a letter arrived at the Fox studio where Empire is filmed. According to News Sources, the letter contained racist and homophobic slurs. It also contained the slogan, “Make America Great Again.” A week later, Chicago police opened a hate crime investigation after Smollett claimed he was attacked by his apartment. He stated that 2 men yelled racial and homophobic slurs, poured bleach on him, and wrapped a noose around his neck. A day later, police released an image of the 2 possible suspects. On February 1st, Smollett makes a statement saying that he has been, “100% factual and consistent on every level,” after there were allegations of a hoax. Smollett made his first public appearance in a sold out concert. The 2 primary suspects were released on February 15 with no charges after “new evidence” was discovered. The day after, CBS News found out that the 2 suspects were brothers named Ola and Abel Osundairo. They reveal that Smollett paid them to stage the attack. Smollett knew these two brothers because they were extras in the show Empire. Days later, The Cook County, Illinois, state attorney files a felony disorderly conduct charge against Smollett. Surveillance video showed the 2 brothers buying the materials they needed to stage the attack. The Chicago police believe that the motive was to make himself a more public figure and to up his salary in Empire. Smollett turned himself in to face the charge. On March 8, The Chicago grand jury charged Smollett with 16 felony accounts for every lie that he told the police. Even with all the evidence against him, he claims he is innocent.
I believe that he is guilty because of all of the evidence stacked against him. I feel pretty angry that he thought it was a good idea to stage a fake hate crime just for his own benefit. It’s disgusting because real people who are minorities and who are gay do go through these things and it’s a real problem. Racism in America is a big problem. For him to utilize this problem so he could get a raise is terrible. At this moment he is currently innocent but I do hope that the justice system will find the truth. He makes the minority community look bad. I interviewed a few people to see what they thought of this situation. I interviewed a fellow KSJC student named Ximena Castańeda. She said that she thinks that Smollett is guilty. She stated, “Yes. From the things that CNN have said he paid people to assault him. He staged a fake hate crime.” She then explained why she thought the case was a huge problem. She said, “Other people have actually experienced hate crime and have been bullied for their sexuality. For him to stage one for his own personal benefit… it’s just bad.” She says that this case has wasted a lot of time. This shows that a lot of people think that Smollett is guilty and what he did was wrong. We hope that the justice system will not fail and bring justice to the crimes that Smollett has committed. |
