By Stacy Tletlepantzi In Guerrero, Mexico, college students were going to hold a peaceful protest about how many families are unable to pay for college and were demanding to reduce college tuitions. People don’t really know how many students went to protest but as the students were protesting peacefully without any violence the police started to beat them and shoot for no reason. The students started to run everywhere trying to hide themselves from getting beaten. By the end, many students were arrested and confused of what was going on and why the police had attacked. This happened September 26, 2014 many people are not sure of what was going on, police were shooting and some were dead too. Six students have been declared dead and 43 have gone missing. Many people think the government had something to do with this because this is not the first time it has happened.
Many people are saying that this is exactly what happened in 1968 Tlatelolco Plaza, this was during the birth of student movements which was not just happening in Mexico but all over the world. The student movement was held because students were tired of repression and police violence, this was ten days before the olympic games in Mexico City. While the students started to protest military tanks started to come in the Tlatelolco Plaza, the police started to beat the students. All of the sudden people were trying to run away but all the exits were blocked by the military. Then “Bang!” bullets were coming out of the sky dropping like cats and dogs. Many people died that day it wasn’t just college students, but mom’s, father’s, and children. It was a war zone that was all provoked by the military who was suppose to keep them safe and protected. At this time the President was Diaz Ordaz, once a couple of months passed the government issued a document that stated that a couple of people had died and that there had not been any chaos at all. This alarmed the people because many people who survived the massacre saw hundreds of people dead on the floor, there were tanks the ones used for the military, later they found that snipers were on the top of some buildings. Many people said it was the government trying to hide the truth from what really happened. After that many students went missing but they were never found. The police didn’t really try to look for the people that went missing and nothing was done at all. Is this truly JUSTICE? Eventually people forgot about this and no one did anything about it which is the worst thing of all. Many years have past and this massacre still remains a mystery. In 2014 this problem is back again. The government claims to have had nothing to do with this, but if the government wasn’t involved then why were police gathering and beating people? Many people suspect that the government and the leaders of the Guerrero Unidos were working together to put an end to this protest. The the Guerrero Unidos are drug dealers who work for a cartel, and have caused many people to fear to their lives in Mexico. This could put the government at risk because of the pack of security and this is also showing how corrupt the government really is. What are people doing to solve this case? Unlike the 1968 massacre people are protesting in the streets, ordering the government to help them find those innocent students. People have hired detectives to try and find those who are responsible for this but it has not been successful. Many family members of the students that went missing have started riots demanding for their children back and have burned some government buildings demanding the government to take action for this. Communities have come together and have gone searching for the 43 college students that have gone missing, but have not been able to succeed. Recently 10 mass graves were found full of dead bodies outside the city. Many of the bodies were cut up and burned and their faces are not identifiable. This could take months to see if these could be the missing students. Recently a german student was shot because he was in a van that looked suspicious and now this has become a national issue because they are putting tourist at risk. They have advised tourist to avoid the northwestern near the border of Mexico because that is close to Guerrero, and their lives could be put at risk. This has put the mexican government on the spot because many people are starting to question the police force, and are accusing the police of being corrupted for working with a criminal gang. They are also questioning the president Enrique Peña Nieto because he isn’t doing enough to protect his people and containing the violence. We as the people should stand up to this because those 43 people cannot just disappear in a day. If those bodies found in the graves turn out to be the 43 students there should be justice. We as the people should all come together and fight for the people who tried fighting for us. This shows how corrupt the government really is and the lack of security we are under. What is going to be our next step?
