Idalia Lopez Over the years gender roles have changed from one thing to another. In the 1950’s women were expected to stay at home to cook, clean and take care of the kids, while men were supposed to “bring home the bacon”. Nowadays it is rare to see families follow these dated ways of living. It is normal to have both the woman and man financially support the family. That being said there are a handful of people who still believe the man should be the primary financial support while the mother be the primary caregiver. While these stereotypes don't necessarily apply to students on campus there are various gender roles and stereotypes that students on campus follow.

Idalia LopezFor those who are unsure what is meant by the phrase “rape culture” there are a multitude of definitions that capture the meaning behind the words. To brush up on some history, this idea first sprung up in the 1970’s by the feminists of the time. It was used to describe a society that perpetuated the ill behavior of men who attacked and or assaulted women then pinned the blame on the victim. Nowadays, examples of this culture include: cracking jokes about getting raped, refusing to follow up on allegations of rape when they’re reported because they happen too often or even using the excuse “boys will be boys” to permiss someone’s impulsive actions. As a still developing young woman, I have already been conditioned to thing as a person who is constantly being watched; a person who is trying to survive whenever they’re alone in public. Growing up my mother never allowed me to wear shorts or skirts like the rest of the young girls my age. She worried that strangers would think I was pretty, but not in the way adults are meant to think a 6 year old is pretty. Even as a 17 year old, I am told to “put on a sweater” or “longer shorts” as a means to keep from provoking anyone from even thinking trying to do anything with me. I was constantly reminded “When walking alone to stay on the main streets” because more witnesses meant less of a chance I would get picked up on. I learned to hate the sound of whistling from oncoming cars because it meant I had caught unwanted attention. Their “complements” were my warning sign to stay alert of my surrounding. I was taught to be submissive because then I would not attract too much attention to myself. Instead of being shaped into a confident young adult, I am nothing more than an afraid and overly attentive adolescent.
Idalia LopezFor those who need clarification, primaries are elections that take place to narrow down the candidates before the office election. In other words, if during the primaries candidates do not get enough support it tends to foreshadow the actual election and some candidates then decide to drop out. Thus leaving less people who continue to run. For the democrats Clinton and Sanders are the two candidates still running, which means Chafee, O’Malley, Lessing and Web have all dropped out. As for the republican party there are five candidates currently running and twelve who have already dropped out. Much like past elections there are always candidates who are “favorites”. As of the last update for primaries on February 25th, Clinton back at it again with the lead of 505 delegates won over by her, while Sanders falls far behind with only 71 delegates won over. To gain nomination the candidates needs at least 2,383 votes won over and with over 4,000 delegates to win over there is still a chance for either earn a nomination. On the republicans side votes needed for nomination are much lower at 1,237. Currently Trump is in the lead with 82 votes while Carson has the least with only 4 votes. With ideas that are as absurd as building a giant wall on the mexican border, to the ingenious idea of free college education, one must know what idea the support and how they can help ensure they get what they want. For closed primary elections registered voters are allowed to vote for the side they are registered as (whether that be democratic or republican ). That being said, if those registered voters do not go into vote for primaries they are putting their views at risk from being voiced by the candidates they favor. For example, if people who strongly support Sanders skipped primary voting they are messing with the possibility of getting him elected. |
