![]() After it’s first tease back in November, the long awaited film Captain Marvel has released and the movie theater lines are long, really long. Captain Marvel has been a highly anticipated movie from the Marvel fans as this superhero gets introduced. This is Marvel’s first female superhero with her own movie. The movie scored 79% on Rotten Tomatoes, 64% Metacritic, and a ⅘ on Common Sense Media. Overall this was a very successful film by Marvel. The people were satisfied and everything that was expected to be in the film, happened. One main thing that comes up in people’s reviews is that the plot takes a while to get going. People find the beginning to be slow paced and contains little to no action. Going around KIPP San Jose Collegiate and asking people about Captain Marvel was not as expected. Not many people watched the film and most of the people that were interviewed did not seemed satisfied with the film. Four people were interviewed, here are the questions they were asked:
The first student that was interviewed is a Sophomore at KSJC. His name is Brian Ibañez and he had this to say: 1: The movie was alright. Started off slow, but the action caught up. 2: I liked it because it shows how Captain Marvel started off the wrong side of the team, but eventually realized and moved to the right side. 3: My favorite scene of the movie is when the cat eats all the people on the wrong side. It was really funny. 4: It’s a marvel movie and I got free tickets. 5: Heck yeah 6: 3/10 for Captain Marvel The second student to be interviewed is a Senior at KSJC. He is an avid Marvel fan and keeps up with the series, his name is Steve Rosales: 1: I felt unsatisfied because the events that led to the Nick Fury losing his eye were not as I anticipated. 2: I liked the film because it was a different approach to an origin story that I wasn’t used to and I really enjoyed it. 3: When Captain Marvel discovered the truth about herself and who the real enemy was 4: The film is part of the Marvel series and a film that leads to the “Big One”, Endgame 5: Yeah 6: 6/10 The third student that was chosen is also a Senior at KSJC. This guy also watched the film because he wanted to keep up with the series but was very disappointed with the film, his name is Sebastian Ramos: 1: The movie started off good and then it got boring. 2: I didn’t like it because I expected better from Marvel 3: The beginning because the background and intro was really good, but then the movie got boring. 4: The hype of the movie was really good and I wanted to follow the series of Marvel movies. 5: I would not recommend this film 6: 6/10 Last but not least, the final person that was interviewed is actually a teacher at KSJC. He is probably the biggest Marvel fan out there and was really looking forward to watching this film, his name is Mr.Markwalter (p.s go subscribe to his YouTube Channel Film Bite): 1: My first impressions were that I generally liked it, some exciting parts and some boring parts. The writing was a little weak. The jokes were flat and characters talked too much. 2: It’s a 50/50 film. It was a decent film. I can’t say I liked it or disliked it. The themes of power and women were things I liked. Right in the middle. 3: I really liked the beginning because it starts off strong and fast paced and introduces the characters really well. The end was not as great as I thought. One of the characters is really well portrayed and really well built. 4: I try to watch every Marvel film and keep up with the series. I wanted Captain Marvel to be my first review on my YouTube channel, Film Bite by Mr.Markwalter 5: Yeah 6: 5/10 and Marvel Wise middle 50% To sum up, Captain Marvel was over-hyped and left viewers unsatisfied. These opinions could also be due to the different origin story idea that was used by Marvel. Many viewers noticed the difference in approach by Marvel in an attempt to make an origin story for Captain Marvel. Marvel fans are now mainly focused on what seems like the final Avengers encounter in the upcoming film Endgame.

![]() Madison Tlatenchi 03-14-19 If you’ve been living under a rock and don’t know what the Oscars are, then I am here to tell you. The Oscars is basically an award ceremony to honor movies or plays. They usually give out awards for best picture, actor/actress in the leading role, actor/actress in supporting role, animated feature film, and etc. This award ceremony takes place every year in order to appreciate those who have put so much effort into the making of these movies. While everyone was rooting for Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper to receive an award, there were a few awards that many people believed should’ve gone to someone else. For example, Green Book won the best picture but people strongly believed that Roma should’ve won because many people can relate to the characters experiences and overall had a better storyline. Tons of people thought that Spike Lee should win for best director but Alfonso Cuaron ended up winning. Spike Lee should have won because he continues to make outstanding films but Alfonso won because Roma best fit the category. Either way whoever won worked hard to earn such an amazing award. There were 5 main total performances at the Oscars, while some were really good others weren’t as great. Performances like Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper singing “Shallow” from their new movie was spectacular. Their chemistry and their voices combined together perfectly and just made the show overall better. Gillian Welch and David Rawlings also had an amazing upbeat performance, it had people dancing and singing throughout the performance. More people expected more from Queen and Adam Lambert and felt that their performances were too hyped up. They would’ve like it better if the band, Queen, and the songs “We Will Rock You” and “We are the champions” together. The Winners Best Picture Winner Costume Design Winner Black Panther (Ruth Carter) Green Book Cinematography Winner Documentary (Feature) Winner Roma (Alfonso Counar) Free Solo Actor in Leading Role Winner Music Original Song Winner Rami Malek in Bohemian Rhapsody “Shallow” from A Star is Born Actor in Supporting Role Winner Short Film Animated Winner Mahershala Ali in the Green Book Bao Actress in Supporting Role Winner Animated Feature Film Winner Regina King in If Beale Street Could talk Spider-Man Into: the Spider Verse Actress in Leading Role Winner Short Film (Live Action) Olivia Colman in The Favourite Skin Overall the Oscars is an award ceremony that celebrities and actors gather around to praise each other for their success. Everyone their was talented and hopefully they make some good movies or plays for us to enjoy. Momo is a statue who scares children in text messaging apps such as “Whatsapp” and “Facebook”. Momo was first known in 2018 world wide and has harmed people. The Momo challenge became a worldwide challenge phenomenon in 2018 after an Indonesian newspaper reported that it has caused a 12 year old girl to kill herself. Momo has performed a series of dangerous tasks including violent attacks, self harm and suicide. Momo has been a concern and distress towards to children and was primarily driven by media reports rather than as a result of “Momo” leading children’s charities to view warnings against the alleged phenomenon as causing more harm than good by leading to a self-fulfilling which may encourage children to look up violent material on the Internet. The Momo challenge has gained the public’s attention in July 2018, when it was noticed by a YouTuber. Momo has been a target to teenagers, people presenting themselves as a character named “Momo” on WhatsApp messages try to convince people to contact them through their cell phone. Momo is being inserted into seemingly innocuous YouTube and YouTube Kids videos about Peppa Pig and Fortnite; these claims were repeated by the group National Online Service. In response to reports, YouTube has said that it has "not received any links to videos showing or promoting the Momo challenge on YouTube" but permits news stories and videos intended to raise awareness of and educate against the alleged phenomenon. The website has demonetised all videos mentioning Momo, including those of news organisations, saying such content violates its advertiser-friendly content guidelines. It has also placed advisory warnings on some Momo videos alerting viewers of "inappropriate or offensive" content. The Momo challenge has spread across the World. The Momo Challenge was first indicated on August 29,2018 in India. After being alerted by a youth who received a Momo Challenge invitation, police in West Bengal issued a warning, and the cybercrime unit has opened an investigation. In France, a group at the State Department was reviewing the situation daily in late July 2018. A complaint was filed on November by a father whose son has committed suicide. Mexican authorities investigating Internet crimes distributed detailed information to parents about the methods of the scheme. They suspect it has spread through a Facebook group frequented by young people. They warned those caught in the scheme risked self-harm, hacking extortion. The Colombian police have not confirmed news reports linking the death of two youths in Barbosa to the Momo Challenge in early september.
![]() By: Yamileth Altamirano If you don’t what YouTube is,well am here to tell you what it is and if they are banning challenges and pranks wrongly. YouTube was founded on February 14, 2005 in San Mateo,CA and just yesterday has been 14 years that it has been created, YouTube is an American video-sharing website headquartered in San Bruno, California. Three former PayPal employees—Chad Hurley, Steve Chen, and Jawed Karim—created the service in February 2005. And just one year later Google bought the site on November 2006 for US$1.65 billion; Now YouTube now operates as one of Google's subsidiaries.Throughout the years YouTube became more and more popular and many people started to post video of themselves, funny videos, and pranks that they were doing as time went on more and more pranks, but now many pranks are becoming more and more dangerous making the probability that someone can get hurt or even die,the saying “it just a prank bro/it's just fake has been used a lot in pranks videos. But is not only pranks that are creating big scandal it’s also challenges a challenge is a all to take part in a competition .Their is also many dangerous things about these because a challenge can be funny but other times it can get someone hurt physically or even internally. Many YouTube make a living out by doing pranks or by doing all these crazy challenges and many YouTube might get affected by this and some of them are Jake vale who has 495,140 subscribers , Roman Atwood who has 900,360 subscribers, Magic of Rahat who has 1,427,401 subscribers , Charles Ross who has 163,819 subscribers., Public Prank who has 126,831 subscribers , Stuart Edge who has 206,417 subscribers., PrankvsPrank who has 2,399,586 subscribe they would be affected by maybe getting most of their videos taken down and they would lose viewers and eventually lose money.Although YouTube only wants to erase all pranks that can hurt someone and the same thing goes for the challenges because may be funny and fun but other are dangerous. Overall YouTube just wants YouTube to be fun but also want it to be safe and while it might take time to go through every video to see if they wanna take it down they will try. By:Ramon Galindo
Dragon Ball Super: Broly is an animated film that was directed by Tatsuya Nagamine. The story was written by Akira Toriyama, the original creator of Dragon Ball. This movie was released November 14, 2018, in Tokyo, and November 18, 2018, in Japan. Dragon Ball Super: Broly was not released in the U.S. until January 16, 2019. The budget for this movie was 8.5 million dollars. At the box office, the movie made over 102 million dollars. This was the most any Anime movie had ever made in the box office. Dragon Ball Super: Broly takes place as part of the Dragon Ball franchise. The Dragon Ball franchise has 4 shows under it’s belt. The original Dragon Ball, Dragon Ball Z, Dragon Ball Super, and a non-canon series Dragon Ball GT. The main character of Dragon Ball is Son Goku. The movie starts off with an origin story of the Saiyan’s homeworld, Planet Vegeta. It shows Planet Vegeta getting destroyed by Frieza. There were only 4 Saiyan survivors, Goku, Vegeta, Broly, and Paragus. It then skips to 41 years later where Goku and Vegeta found a home on Earth where they have grown and developed their power. Broly and Paragus were both exiled to a distant planet before their homeworld was destroyed and have been living there ever since. Through those 41 years, Lord Frieza developed a rivalry with Goku and Vegeta. Frieza finds Broly and Paragus living on planet Vampa. Paragus says he wants revenge on King Vegeta for exiling them. Frieza tells him that King Vegeta is dead but his son resides on Earth. Goku and Vegeta find out that Frieza was on Earth so they rushed to his location. When Goku and Vegeta arrive, Paragus immediately tells Broly to attack. Throughout the battle, Broly’s father Paragus dies and Broly begins to lose control of his power. He then starts fighting Frieza. Goku and Vegeta take this chance to fuse and they become Gogeta. Gogeta then defeats Broly. A few days later Goku tells Broly that he hopes they can be friends and that they could train together. The movie did pretty well in theatres. According to Rotten Tomatoes, 94% of movie viewers liked the film. Critics also gave the movie a good score and rated it 8.3/10 on IMDb. I interviewed different people who saw the film to see if they enjoyed the movie. I interviewed a fellow KSJC student, Kevin Elias, about the movie. I asked him if he enjoyed the movie. He said, “Yeah I did. It was hella cool and the fight scene between Gogeta and Broly was sick.” I asked him if he would see the movie again and he said yes. I asked him if he would change anything about it and he said, “I would change stuff about the origin story but other than that, no.” I asked him if he could rate the movie and he said he’d give it a 9/10. I interviewed another KSJC student, Conrad Mateo, and I asked him if he enjoyed the movie. He said, “Yes I did because all the battles were epic and I liked the origin story.” I then asked him if he would see it again and he said, “Yes I would love to see it again.” I asked him what he would rate the film out of ten and he said 10/10. Overall the film did well and both critics and viewers loved it. The Super Bowl is a special event that gathers people around to watch a football championship and as much as people watch it for the game, some people also watch it for the halftime show that’s meant to entertain the fans at the arena. This year's halftime show had mix feelings with the public. Some are saying it was good and other say it was bad. ![]() The amount of people here at school who liked the show was very little. Some didn’t even know about the show. However, some people who did like it seemed to only like one part, and one part only, which was the intro to Travis Scott’s song “Sicko Mode”. The reason being is that it began with a “Sponge Bob” meme that had been surfing around before the Super Bowl. It seems as if they enjoyed seeing something that they wanted. The amount of people at school who hated the show was a lot. One of the reasons being that the show was boring. Another reason is that the show was pretty bad and not entertaining. The last reason was the fact that people felt like Travis Scott ruined the “Sponge Bob” meme by only using it for the intro and not using it enough. Many people felt let down by it, which is one of the main reasons as to why people didn’t like it. Lastly it seemed like the people who were selected to do the halftime show was not the best.
In conclusion it seemed like the amount of people who hated the show was more than the people who enjoyed the show. It also shows that as much as the game was bad so was the halftime show which meant that the whole event wasn’t a success for the NFL. Sergio Contreras
1/17/19 The exclusive to PlayStation 4 game, Spider-man, by Insomniac games was quite superb. The game is based on Spider-man in Manhattan. There was many mechanics that were combined from previous games. These mechanics were the ones that made the previous games good. The swinging mechanics from previous games were not seen as good since his webs wouldn’t attach to buildings. This game fixed that problem and everyone who played the game loves it. The game also includes a great line of voice actors, from Stan Lee himself, to Yuri Lowenthal. The story was very good and keeps you at the edge of the seat with every villain that is introduced. The game has a pretty good leveling system. Each mission or even side mission that you do around the city gives you a decent amount of experience points. Just playing through the story gives you a good amount. Each time you level up you get skill points. You can use these skill points to purchase new skills from the skill tree. You can upgrade three different branches each one adding on to the gameplay. After you continue buying skills, the cost for them begin to rise, so towards the end of the game, you might have trouble buying the last few skills. You could unlock the rest after completing the game. Another thing that you can collect and use as currency is tokens. There are six different types of tokens that you can collect, Research tokens, Landmarks tokens, Challenge tokens, Base tokens, Backpack tokens, and Crime tokens. You can collect these by doing various side missions based on the token you are trying to get. With these tokens, you can buy new suits and gadgets. There are many gadgets that the player can get. Each one can help change the players play style. Some gadgets allow people to be more stealthy and some let the player take on hordes of enemies at once. With the tokens that you can collect, you can purchase new suits. Almost each suit comes with a new suit mod. These suit mods give the player new abilities. You can mix and match suit with suit mods. Swinging around in these new suits that you can unlock is pretty fun. Playing around with the camera is cool feature you can use. You can around the city take take selfies with civilians or go around to different buildings. Another thing about this game is the cameo that Stan Lee has. His first video game cameo was in the release of the PlayStation 1 Spider-man game that was also called Spider-man. His first appearance in a game was in Spider-man PS1 and his last cameo so far was in Spider-man PS4. ![]() By: Fabian Reyes The “Call of Duty Black Ops” series is a very popular and well-known game and with the new game out Black Ops IIII(or BO4 for short) many people wonder if the new game is good or not. I will ask people how they feel about the new Black Ops game is it good or is bad and if it’s bad why and does that affect the whole series? I first asked Jonathan, a ninth grader at KSJC, he said, ”The game is ok it’s not really worth all the hype”, and he also stated that ”The game mode blackout is like PUBG(another type of game) and I really don’t like that.” He said in a rate from 1-10 he’d give it a 7 that it could use the room for improvement like not copying other games like “Fortnite” and “PUBG”. The second person I asked was a freshman named Luis and he told me that he found the game fun and that he liked the game. He said that he really liked the new mode blackout because of the way that it resembles other battle royal games. He said, ”The game is fun, I like how they are trying something new with the games but still keeping it the same vibe to it.” He also said, ”I still like how you can hop onto the game and still knowing that there’s going to be that one person that is being the biggest tryhards.” Gathering their opinions, it can be inferred that some people find the game good and others find the game not all that good. Also, I've also played the game and I don’t really like the game only because I feel like the game is like all the other battle royal games that are out right now and I don’t really like that. In conclusion it is shown that Black Ops 4 is not as good as people expected it to be and a lot of people feel like blackout was just a rip off of other games that were out already and was just the same thing like every other game and it seems like not a lot of people like that. By: Yamileth Altamirano![]() If you don’t have Netflix then you most likely haven’t watched Bird Box, and so here I am to give you a review. The movie consists that when a mysterious and evil force erases the population, nobody knows why or how this is happening but one thing is for sure, if you look at it you die. And now the rest of the survivors need to avoid looking at this mysterious being and survive. The movie was shot in different locations such as the house exterior is from Monrovia, and Cinematography was partly in Santa Cruz and the final shot was taken in Scripps College. Actors
What do critics think? One of the most famous Critics is Rotten Tomatoes. Rotten Tomatoes is an American Website for review-aggregation for Films and Television. The Netflix film Bird Box was rated 5.7/10 and 68% of the Audience liked the film. And it was rated 83% Fresh and 51% Rotten. Many critics say that the film failed to make them care about the characters. Many critics also say that they wished that the film lived up to its creepy potential and that the film also failed to distinguish itself from other movies. The main character Malorie played by Sandra Bullock, has been greatly appreciated by many critics for her amazing acting. Would people recommend it? While asking students and family members I came to the conclusion that like many critics state if you like movie like Bird Box you would like it, but if you are a person that is very critical about movies then you might go more into detail and not like it. - Isak A my brother said “I do recommended it because it a good movie and it's entertaining and it's scary and it's a good movie to watch with your family” - My parents say “I do recommended because its a movie that can show you what can happen later on in the future, and it's a movie that can help us understand how blind people feel like” - Marco C a freshman at KSJC said “I do recommended because it’s a pretty good movie ,it also had a very good background story” - Kenia C also a Freshman at KSJC said “I do recommended it because it was very suspenseful it also had a very interesting plot” - Nicole H a Senior at KSJC said “Yes, but only if you review it really well, like the scenes that were good, and scenes that need more, you know?” |
