![]() By: Agustin Garcia Damian Baseball is a sport in which two teams take turns batting and fielding, in which each one is like offense and defense respectively. The batter has a huge role to play in the game since they are the ones who are trying to score for their team. Baseball is a sport that many people play and love to watch, and it has been shown in the Olympics and has a national league for it. However, baseball is a sport that our community does not have much of an interest in. However, it’s a sport that those who play find to be very fun and exciting. Many people would love to play in the MLB and make it big playing baseball. The sport, though, doesn’t bring many people to try out. Either way, baseball has been a sport of KSJC for 8 to 9 years already. Recently the team had been led by Osvaldo Reza, who is also the assistant Varsity coach for Volleyball and Baseball, as well as the Algebra 1 teacher. However, despite the attempts to get lots of players for a team, KSJC has been getting barely enough players for a team each year. Due to this fact, the Athletic Department are wondering if they should keep putting in the school's money in order to keep baseball. Many are left to wonder if they will, in fact, take out baseball as an option for a spring sport, or if they will keep baseball and hope that there will be enough players for a team next year. Baseball will not be returning as a sport next year because the school and athletics department, composed of Ms. De La Rosa, who also coaches Cross Country and Varsity Girls Basketball, as well as Mr. McCormack, who coaches Cross Country as well, need to make a prior commitment to the league, and they have consistently not had enough players or have had to continue playing. Very few students try out for the team, and of those, few are let on because many don’t have the good enough grades to stay on the team. Grades and interest have always been trouble when it comes to filling up the team. Baseball just isn’t really wanted or played by the people in our school, and yet those who do show up will most likely not have the good enough grades to be on the team or grades that are to Reza’s taste. Due to this, “try-outs” are usually prolonged and the athletic department just can’t go and guarantee their commitment to the league. Baseball has been said to maybe be brought up in the near future but all depends on the coming years and students who attend. Dela Rosa stated that the money for baseball has no true route but will most likely go towards other sports. Thus, the Athletic Department has been thinking about taking out Baseball for years now, and finally, after this year, they decided that it was time for baseball to go. ![]() As said before, Baseball might be coming back. After asking the new Head Athletic Director, Christine Dela Rosa, she stated that Baseball might truly be brought up in the upcoming years. “If there is a high student interest to bring it back and we have the right coaching staff, we could,” is what she said, so Baseball might have a future at KSJC after all, but next year’s freshman will not have the option of joining. Softball is a sport very much like Baseball, but Softball will not be taken out because they have consistently had a good number of girls coming out to try out, and they do have the good grades to stay. Thus softball has not been taken out and will most likely not be taken out in the near future. Another sport that has been taken out during the years is JV Basketball. JV basketball has been taken out before because there is a lack of interest in the sport but recently there has been a huge interest in basketball so JV Basketball will most likely not be taken out in recent years. Basketball is a sport that everybody at our school seems to love, and compared to baseball, is a very huge sport on campus. Baseball has met the end of the line with this one and unfortunately not be returning next year. All in all, Baseball has been taken out because of the lack of interest and the school’s lack of commitment to the league in charge of Baseball. JV Basketball has been met with the same fate as Baseball but it is still a mystery if it will be taken out for next year. Softball, the “sister” sport to baseball, will not be taken out of the school’s sports roster. Baseball won’t be returning as an option for next year. What do you guys think? Should baseball be taken out or reinstated? Will next year’s freshman want baseball as an option?
