“Very often. They ask me what I am and I say guatemalan but they insist guatemala is a part of Mexico.” “It bothers me on a scale of 1-10, to an 8.” “No.” “When people mistake her for Mexican it’s on accident.” “Yes, I still follow traditions that we have. The food we eat at home we eat Guatemalan tamales instead of Mexican tamales.” “It’s a really cool place, we don’t live in trees. It’s a very beautiful place and it should definitely be visited.” Genesis (- Christian Flores-Nicaragua Itzel-Mexico/Nicaragua “ Evelyn/Karla-El Salvador William/Steve-El Salvador Jessica Gregorio-Guatemalan Ortega-El Salvador How often are you confused for Mexican? Does it bother you? What do you respond with? Have you ever been ashamed of where you come from? Do you think that people do it on purpose or on accident? Do you embrace the culture of your country? If so, how? What would you like people to know about where you are from?

In history, women were restricted to being able to do certain things and to be involved in certain things. There has been many women and men who have made a difference in their life for others. For example, Maya Angelou is a well known African-American spokeswomen, activist, and American poet. She’s the author of the book, “Why the Caged Bird Sings”. It’s a bibliography that touched a lot of women because of her struggles as a young girl. She’s empowering because even through her difficulties she was still able to remain being a strong and confident women. Feminism means that it’s a movement and ideologies that share the goal of establishing and successfully obtaining equal economic, political and civil rights for women. Feminists believe that cultures that oppose girls having an education should be therefore changed. They want every girl to have the same rights as men. Has inequality come to KSJC? Do guys have more rights than girls in the school? Through living an experience in my sophomore and junior year there has been a look of both feminism and antifeminism. In sophomore year, KSJC established its first Associates Student Government and everyone was welcome to join. I was part of it as well. This shows how there is equal opportunity for everyone. Junior year came and my friend, Thu and I decided to run for Student Body President. We were the only girls to run for this position. I hoped for one of us to win election, but there was a majority of votes for the boys running for the same position. I hoped for a girl being president, but there are many factors that can also contribute to the election. I encourage every girl to strive for the best and do what makes them happy. It’s exciting how history has changed and continues to change as there is more equality among the two different genders. Michelle Perez
Not many people know about five guys but it is definitely a burger place to know about. Starting in 1986 in Arlington, Virginia to now having over 1,000 locations in 47 states and 6 Canadian places. With their highly recognized rich peanut oil, their burgers are surely to savour in your mouth. They only use freshly ground beef and nothing is ever frozen, only cooled. Ever since 1999, they have been voted the Washingtonian Magazine's ¨Readers' Choice¨ #1 burger, so they are surely to be great. Their menu has a variety of choices. Not only do they have great burgers but also amazing fries! With a choice of small, medium, or large regular or cajun style fries. Fries are definitely one of my favorite things to order but may not always be the healthiest choice. Although, at five guys the fries are cooked in pure peanut oil which has no cholesterol. You can also choose between 4 different types of hot dogs: kosher style, cheese, bacon, or bacon cheese dog. They also have sandwiches. For all the vegetarians out there, there are veggie sandwiches or cheese veggie sandwiches and for non vegetarians there are grilled cheese or bacon lettuce tomato sandwiches. Lastly, they have a variety of burgers including hamburgers, cheeseburgers, bacon burgers, bacon cheeseburgers and for the kids there are little hamburgers, little cheeseburgers, little bacon burgers, and little bacon cheeseburgers. With all these choices, you also have a choice of extra condiments like mayo, lettuce, pickles, tomatoes, grilled onions, grilled mushrooms, ketchup, mustard, relish, onions, jalapeno peppers, green peppers, A.1. steak sauce, barbecue sauce, and hot sauce. There is also free delicious bulk peanuts for any customer that walks in and you can get as much as you want. Whenever I get a craving for a burger, five guys is always my first choice. With every order of fries, they also put an extra batched in your bag so you basically get an extra large fries for free and who doesn't like free things?! The nearest one in town is found at The Plant on Monterey road and Curtner avenue. Make sure to make a stop if you're ever craving a good burger. Whether its your first or second time, it'll surely be a burger you'll enjoy. Sarah Aranillo
April 29, 2016 Dear Bethany, This week I received a rejection letter from the school that I applied to, I feel so empty knowing I won’t be able to attend that college it was my dream school too. I don’t get why they would reject me, I worked so hard through school got the best grades I can get, took AP classes, was involved in extracurricular activities, everything! What do I do to deal with this rejection? Sincerely, GGYG First things first, everyone has been rejected in their life, whether it be during a relationship, an audition for a role in a show, or rejection for a book you’re trying to publish, or even a rejection from a college or dream college. Since they are different cases of rejection there are also different ways to deal with them. First step is acceptance, you got rejected, now what? Yeah it hurts that you got rejected by your DREAM SCHOOL but it might have been a reason not because of you. It could have been because the schools acceptance rate is just too low and no one really had a chance of getting in unless you were basically perfect with a 4.0 GPA or higher, took AP classes through your highschool years, did summer school. Another reason could be because of financial issues, maybe the school just can’t support you because their financial aid program isn’t meant for you. Some tips for you my friend, try talking to someone, it doesn’t have to be your friends, it can be your parents, your teachers or someone you know who also might have the same case as you. Try getting your mind off of what happened after you talked about it like going out with your friends, doing some activities, or even looking on other schools you might have applied to or follow up with other schools you have applied to. Know that things will work out for you though it seems like it’s the end of the world, IT’S NOT! Though you won’t be attending the dream school there could be other schools just as good or even better that will accept you. |
