The ANova Hacks is a hackathon that was made for high schoolers from unresourceful communities to be able to go onto the UC Berkeley campus for half a day. They give out food, have a lot of mentors on duty, and a lot of information to tell students about computer science. The ANova Hacks club in Berkeley reached out to us KIPPsters because they know about our schools and we have a partnership with them. ANova is an organization at UC Berkeley to help improve computer science learning. They have worked with 15 middle schools and high schools in the East Bay to teach their computer science programs.
The program first starts off by having a lesson on beginners coding and special topics computer science workshops. Secondly, there will be demos from the Berkeley STEM clubs and college application workshops. This shows that the hackathon is a very beginner friendly that has voluntary college students that can help mentor students not just in computer science, but also with college experience. I had a chance to interview one of the participants that attended the program, Rachelle.: Q: What do you think of the program? A: “Overall I think it was a great opportunity to take part in. I would recommend it to students who are unsure of what they want to major in college because it really piqued my interest in computer science.” Q: How were the vibes at the program? A: “At first everyone was shy and reluctant because they were in their own groups, but after being assigned with random people everyone got along and it went pretty nice!” Q: How were the people that helped you? A: They were very nice. They knew what they were talking about. They also told use about their background, talked about their life during college, and a lot of them were helpful. Q: Would you recommend this program to other people? A: I would highly recommend this program! There are many workshops, you get to work on projects, and be in a good environment for beginners hackers. I think it was interesting to learn about the different kinds of hacking and programs out there. There was also food provided!!! -Jimmy Nguyen
