By Ramon Galindo The Curse of La Llorona is a supernatural horror/ mystery movie that was released on April 19, 2019. It was Directed by Michael Davis and James Wan. It is the newest entry into the Conjuring Universe that James Wan has created. The movie has a running time of 90 minutes. The budget for this movie was 9 million dollars and it made 87 million dollars in the box office. Based on the Mexican folklore of La Llorona, the film stars Linda Cardellini, Raymond Cruz and Patricia Velasquez, and follows a mother in 1970s Los Angeles who must save her children from a ghost who is trying to steal them away.
The movie received a 29% on rotten tomatoes and a 50% on the audience score. It has seen as a bad movie by movie critics and a so-so movie by the audience. It got a low review because La Llorona takes place in LA. In the original folklore, La Llorona lives in Mexico. People did not like that the movie followed the generic formula of scary movies. It did not bring anything new to the table. The jump scares were not scary and you could see them coming from a mile away. One critic, Joshua Rothkopf, said, “It may further the brand a bit, but it's the opposite of frightening: a sludgy collection of tired jump scares, inexpertly mounted period décor -- this time we're in a too-shiny 1973 Los Angeles -- and a continued slump into generic blandness.” When he says that it may further the brand, he means that it would make the Conjuring universe more popular. I think that the movie was pretty mediocre. Like many people have said, the jump scares were predictable and it didn’t bring anything new to horror movies. While I was in the theater, I found myself getting more angry than scared. I was angry at the characters in the story for making stupid decisions. The movie however did a good job on not relying on the fact that it was part of the Conjuring Universe. It made a quick little reference to the Annabelle movie and then it continued with the story. The movie was enjoyable but it was average at best.
