Mr.Hansen, also known as Dustin Hansen, is the 11th-grade English teacher, and AP language teacher here at KIPP San Jose Collegiate. He has been working here for two years but sadly there will not be a third. Mr.Hansen will not be returning next year because he is moving to Denver to work for KIPP Northeast Denver Leadership Academy. Mr.Hansen was born in Woodlands, California. He spent half of his life in Northern California, and the other half in Seattle, Washington. As a kid, he wanted to be a professional baseball player. For high school, Mr.Hansen attended Yuba City High School. When asked how he would describe himself he replied with “I thought I knew a lot. But sadly, I knew very little. In high school, he didn’t participate in any clubs or sports. In his senior year, he wanted to go Washington State which is where he later was accepted to. His reason for going to Washington State is that he had always wanted to go there ever since he was a child. Mr.Hansen loved college but felt that it took him longer to get there than he had originally hoped for. In college, Mr.Hansen transformed from his earlier days. He worked hard and was very focused. He finally realized that there a lot for him to learn in the world. He was part of honors cohorts in the English, and philosophy department, and was also a part of an honors society called Phi Beta Kappa. Mr.Hansen graduated from Washington State with a major in English and Philosophy. When asked what he wanted to do after college and what he ended up doing he replied with “I wanted to argue with adults, but instead I got paid to argue with teenagers”. After college, he thought in a small town called Ruleville, which is in Mississippi. KIPP had always been a presence in the south, so he had heard that KIPP was a high-performing charter high school. Mr.Hansen loves KSJC and feels that his last two years here have solidified his desire to stay in the classroom until they have to carry him out. In the future, he plans on continuing to travel, read, and enjoy life. Mr.Hansen’s greatest childhood memory was going to baseball games with his dad all the time, but more specifically when got to witness Ken Griffey Jr. hit his 8th consecutive home run to tie a major league record. His favorite things include the color green, Thai food, the novel Crime and Punishment by Dostoevsky, traveling to Scandinavia. Mr.Hansen enjoys listening to all kinds of music including punk rock, folk, country, hip-hop, blues, show tunes, and pop. P.S, Mr.Hansen wants everyone to know that he feels incredibly lucky to have spent time here at KSJC and that the students, staff, and parents left an amazing impression on him. Also, he is going to miss us all dearly.
