By: Kayla Wong From the immersive panels to the ever changing cosplay the Comic Con has it all. This three day convention holds panels, exhibit halls, and the selling of merchandise. These conventions are held around the world, but started in San Diego, California in 1970. It first started as a small convention with two special guests and its purpose was to start funding for a bigger convention the founders wanted. After the first few conventions they finally got the current name San Diego Comic-Con. The founders also wanted the convention to be a place where people could discuss films and science fiction/fantasy literature. Today, visitors can indulge also in free merchandise, comic books, panels, etc. First, a person must get a badge as to get into the event itself. The process is quite easy, but because of the cap on attendance the San Diego Comic-Con has it cannot guarantee a person a badge into San Diego Comic Con. To get a badge those interested in attending comic con must sign up for a Comic-Con Member Id. This can be done on the San Diego Comic-Con website with help from the video guide. Once you have a Comic-Con Members ID then you have to wait for the day sales for badges have dropped. The San Diego Comic-Con suggests that people should follow them on social media, so that they know when the badges are being sold. From this ID you will be able to purchase a badge. If you don’t have this ID then you will not be able to access the online information to buy the badge. If you need more information check out the San Diego Comic-Con website. One of the main attractions is the panels that the Comic-Con gives to attendees. Hall H, the biggest hall that holds panels can hold about 6,000 people and gets packed easily. It’s one of the best and worst parts of Comic-Con. I can be the best because it is a dream come true for any fan, but can be the worst because of the lines that it creates. To be guaranteed a seat to view a panel, is to wake up bright and early to line up in front of Hall H. This applies to the all of the panels throughout the day. If you want to play your luck, you can get in line outside of Hall H and see if you can get in, though it is quite unlikely, because of the massive lines outside of Hall H. This may be one of the most popular hall, but there are multiple smaller panels that people can sit through. Many of the smaller ones can be hidden gems at Comic-Con, with animators talking about their experience working on an animation or a director talking about one of their small films. Keep the days schedule on hand because they can be one of the best tools that can be used to direct you to something interesting. If you’re really interested in comics, then comic-con is the place for you. Don’t take it from me but from a student who went to comic con, they said, “ I really recommend this event. I was able to find a lot of new friends that were interested in the same things. There were really cool cosplay characters there too.” A teacher that attended Comic-Con said, “It was a dream come true for a nerd like me. It was really eye opening and inspiring, especially for my creative work.” IF you’re interested in going to comic con there is a Silicon Valley one next year or if you’re impatient see if you can get tickets to San Diego Comic-Con in the summer.

Marvel Studios and Walt disney Motion Pictures partnered up to create this movie. Black Panther was first shown on the first Fantastic Four; he also came out on the movie Civil War. Black Panther made more money that Wonder Woman, Spiderman 3, and Deadpool. It made over $500M in North America and made over $800M worldwide. The creators used $200M to create Black Panther. They made a profit of approximately $600M. Black Panther’s trailer got over 31M views. The Black Panther trailer gave us a lot of clips but if you just watch the trailer then you don't know why they fought in the first place. The trailer doesn't really give us a lot of background information which gets us confused on what is going to happen. They left out some good parts, but the rest of the trailer has a lot of good parts of the movie. The movie Black panther was 2 hours and 15 minutes. Black Panther was the first hit of any African superhero movie. Black Panther was in the Top 100 Superhero Comic List. Black Panther was filmed in four different locations. The locations were Atlanta, Georgia; Busan, South Korea; Iguazu Falls, Argentina; South Africa; Zambia; and Uganda. They filmed in Atlanta, Georgia because Marvel Civil War and Infinite War are going to be filmed there. I asked a fellow student some questions about Black Panther and this was his feedback. 1.What were you expecting from this movie?
After getting that feedback I noticed that people just went to see it because of T'challa (Black Panther) and not the importance of it. I asked my teacher Mr. Monagle and he had a different response. 1.What were you expecting from this movie?
When I see Mr. Monagle respond, I see that he was really paying attention to the movie and he cares about race. People have different responses and different feelings toward the movie. Overall the movie is a really cool movie and entertaining. How African people have very high technology is really interesting because they say white people always have everything when in this movie the tables turned. If you are a fan of Marvel and want to keep up with Marvel, then you should really watch this movie. by Isaac Amparan

It's a time where people bond in a way without having to talk or interact. Of course, the most important thing to watching a movie is being interested in what you are going to watch and making sure you will like it. It wouldn't be a waste of money if you went to the movie theaters to watch Den of Thieves because it's a pretty good movie! Den of Thieves came out in theaters on January 19, 2018. At first, the trailer does not seem as interesting because they left a lot of the good parts out, but when it came out in theaters it was super good. The sound is loud and you get to watch the movie on a screen that is a lot bigger than the tv you have at home. It is a pretty long movie; it lasts for 2 hours and 30 minutes. In the beginning of the movie, everything is calm; the major event has not happened yet, but a good thirty minutes later is when the real magic hits! The climax of the movie begins to happen, and from then on, everything makes you jump, and shout those “ooh’s” and “ahh’s”. The movie takes place in Los Angeles, California. It is about a gritty crime saga, which follows the lives of an elite unit of the LA County Sheriff's Dept. and the state's most successful bank robbery crew as the outlaws plan a seemingly impossible heist on the Federal Reserve Bank. It is a rated R movie and “86% of people enjoyed this thriller film/mystery”. I went to ask my sister and her boyfriend what they thought of the movie and if they would recommend it to a friend. My sister replied, “It was definitely a very long movie. It started off kind of boring, but when it got to the suspense part it was a very good movie. I would recommend it to a friend; when I have time I would most likely go back and watch it again”. As for when I asked her boyfriend what he thought, he told me, “Very good movie. Definitely woke me up especially because we watched it at 11:30 pm. Would recommend it to a friend and would consider rewatching it”. There are many parts in the movie where it makes you jump because there are a lot of shooting scenes involving blood in the movie. Of course, since it is rated R, you need a parent to watch it with you (if you are underage) because, apart from showing the shooting and blood, there are some inappropriate scenes shown in the movie. I would mention people's favorite parts of the whole movie, but in case you have not seen the movie yet, I'm not going to spoil it for you because you need to go watch it and see it for yourselves! This movie would be nice to watch with a significant other because since it is a thriller, you get to cuddle and not be as scared. However, if you would like to go with your parent, that is just as great because you get to cuddle with your mom, for example, and be thrilled together! Overall this movie is pretty great. The suspense and unpredictable scenes in the movie will definitely surprise you. Most of the movies that are in the theaters are not that good, so if you ever want a good suspense movie, definitely consider watching this movie. Since it is a long movie, it makes your money worth it! By: Isael Diaz
Michael Keaton, predominantly well known for his iconic role in the film Batman (1989), finds himself in a role a bit to unusual from what others typically recognize him as in his career as an Hollywood actor. Keaton trades in his iconic persona that made him huge way back then, to a new challenge that lies ahead of head of him, that can either make him into something new or break him. Ladies and gentlemen, the one and only Michael Keaton is taking his talents outside the big screen and will embark on a new journey filled with ups and downs as he goes out with the old and in with the new. Birdman is a type of film that I’d never seen before in a film at all. The incorporation of multiple genres has been seen in tons of films past and present, however this film’s incorporations of the multiple genres is fantastic especially how well it can move from another without little to any conflict at all. The film tends to know when and how to switch from the different genres throughout the course of the film. At points in the film there is dose of humor, seriousness, and mental pain and agony all wrapped into one creating a unique one of a kind film that is rare to see in films now a days. Keaton plays Riggan Thomson, a typical washed up Hollywood star that was once a big in the eyes of many for his predominate role as Birdman in the superhero’s film trilogy many years ago. Riggan’s day’s in the bird costume are over as, he has one last chance to prove to himself despite his obvious downfall that he can still be a great actor even though he is doing something that isn’t quite familiar with. Some time ago, Riggan received a note from honored writer Raymond Carver who, gave Riggan a compliment based on his abilities as a performer. This moment was very inspiring for Riggan he decided pay homage to Mr. Carver by adapting his story, “What We Talk About When We Talk About Love” onto the stage. It appears that Riggan has devoted tons of time, money and his entire life to making this play into to something special for him. Could this be Riggan’s moment in time to find success elsewhere and completely ditch the Birdman persona? Success isn’t built overnight, it takes time and surely Riggan was very aware of that. As opening night for Riggan’s play is slowly approaching one of the cast members of the play ends up injured by a light fixture falling down onto Riggan’s cast member. This unfortunate accident makes Riggan hire a new actor to replace the injured one Mike Shiner (Edward Norton), who is affirmed to shake things up with Riggan’s play. In the meantime aside from his play, Riggan has to deal with his girlfriend Laura Auldburn (Andrea Riseborough) his estranged ex-wife Sylvia Thomson (Amy Ryan) snotty film critic Tabitha Dickinson (Lindsay Duncan), Birdman (his visualized younger self) , and of course his daughter Sam Thomson (Emma Stone). The director of Birdman, Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu deserves tons of praise for truly making a one of a kind film that many of us have yet to seen before, as to what made this film so great and glorious is how the film was the one take aesthetic and its overall impact on the film. The film shot in one take made everything go on in the film look fast, which in result made what the audience was watching very elaborate and stunning; grabbing the audience’s attention. The use of the one take shot is what truly sets Birdman apart from other films. Including conflict for Riggan with his former persona Birdman, was great for the overall plot of the film because how well Riggan’s character was able to deal with him in his mental fantasy despite having to deal with others in real time. Constantly there is presented conflict with Riggan and his former persona usually seen when others aren’t around Riggan. The Birdman persona tends to get in the way in what Riggan hopes and aspires with his new dream that he intends to pursue by being very critical of his new dream and giving his a bit of a reminder of the glory days that he once had many years ago, but ultimately it's all in the past now. Birdman gets the notion that Riggan being a Hollywood Star isn’t even comparison to him now being a Broadway Actor. Birdman doesn’t appreciate that Riggan abandoned completely, finding a new life that doesn’t involve the one that once made him a star a quite long time ago. In brief, There are a tons of things are happening in Birdman. A former star who seems to be on the decline, getting rid of the old and bringing in the new. The critical criticism of the those in the Hollywood industry vs those in the Broadway industry. The themes of redemption and family struggles as demonstrated with struggles with Riggan’s new second new pursued life and struggled father daughter relationship between Riggan and his daughter Sam. The inclusion of magical realism that causes the audience to distinguish between what is real and what is fantasy in the course of the film. Before watching this film, I had no idea who was Michael Keaton or the others in the film, however I am sure to check of others films that they have been in. People tend to associate Michael Keaton as Batman, but I’ll associate Mr. Keaton as Birdman, who knows maybe actually Keaton sometime during his career as an actor will get a chance to be Birdman in a superhero film in the near future. We just have to wait and see. By Anita Lara 3 Reasons Why: It is about a girl named Hannah who gets bullied by thirteen different people. February 26th, 2017 was the 89th annual Academy Awards, which took place in the Dobly in Los Angeles, California. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Science honored the best films of 2016. This year’s Awards were without a doubt, the most memorable Awards in history, mainly because of the ending. The two most notable films of 2016 were Moonlight and La La Land. Many expected that La La Land would be receiving tons awards during the course of the night. They in fact did receive awards, but surprisingly the didn’t receive the award that many expected them to win. The last award being presented during the night was the “Best Picture” award. The presenters of the award were the stars of the 1960’s hit film Bonnie and Clyde, Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway. The situations beings as Warren Beatty reads the envelope that says La La Land, claiming that they won the Best Picture. However it turns that Moonlight was the film that actually won Best Picture, as it was discovered that Warren Beatty was handed they Best Actress In Leading Role Envelope instead. And thus, The best moment in the history of the Academy Awards happened. Despite the mishap ending of the Academy Awards it was not the only great thing about that night. The other great thing about the 2017 Academy Awards was the political moments of the ceremony. People tend not to enjoy when politics interferes in things they enjoy watching but, due to what is going on in this troubled world, it wasn’t really a surprise that during the course of the ceremony was about 70% political. The Academy Awards were acting political in a humorous way and informal way. The host of this year’s awards, Jimmy Kimmel made sure that he took that to his full advantage. From poking fun at Meryl Streep by calling her “overrated” just as Donald Trump described her in a tweet rant. The highlight of the political moments of the Academy Awards was when there were meaningful statements and a clear message send out to the president of the United States. The foreign film, The Salesman’s director Asghar Farhadi won an Oscar for the “Best Foreign Language Film”. However, The director did didn’t attend the Academy Awards because he was boycotting it due to the president’s Muslim travel ban. The award was accepted on his behalf by former Nasa scientist Firouz Naderi and engineer/astronaut Anousheh Ansari. Anousheh would then go on to read the words from the director. “My absence is out of respect for the people of my country and from the other six nations who have been disrespected by the inhumane law which bans immigrants' entry into the U.S. Dividing the world into the 'us and our enemies' categories creates fear, a deceitful justification for aggression and war.” I applaud the director to show his compassion and support and speaking out of the issue that is impactful to many currently. |
